Stokke Baby Carrier

by Margaret Taylor | Last Updated: August 2019

Baby carriers offer a hassle-free way of keeping your little one close while leaving your hands free to get whatever you need done. They allow for parent-child bonding as you go about doing your daily chores around the house, while also giving you the freedom to go out and about town without worrying about your baby’s comfort or safety.

One of the best carriers for this – whether your baby is a new born or even a couple of years old – is the Stokke Baby Carrier.

Why Stokke Baby Carriers Rock

A structured carrier that can be worn in three different ways depending on the age/weight of the baby – front-facing inwards for new born babies, front-facing outwards for older babies that can hold their head up unaided, and back-carrying for toddlers – Stokke ensures that your baby is in an ergonomically appropriate position no matter which seating option you choose.

Most other carriers are purely front carriers or back carriers, but this covers both and allows you to carry the child from birth upto about 3 years old.

One of the best carriers for this – whether your baby is a new born or even a couple of years old – is the Stokke Baby Carrier.

Its water and wind resistant (in case you and your baby are feeling a little adventurous) and there is even an integrated sun shade/hood (for use in the back-carry option), a shaped back plate, as well as storage pockets for change, your cell phone, keys, etc in the side panelling. (More on this later)

Most Comfortable Baby Carrier Around

With adjustable shoulder and waist straps designed to fit all body types no matter who is doing the carrying, the Stokke MyCarrier is super sturdy and provides great lumbar support, provided you adjust the straps efficiently.

Out of the box, the carrier comes in three parts – the harness and hip belt, the front carrier portion and the back carrier portion and weighs approximately 0.8 kilograms (1.76 lbs). You also get an aluminium support rod which goes directly into the main harness.

Secured by double locking carabiners (yes, there are actual carabiners), it’s completely adjustable for appropriate weight distribution no matter what position you decided to carry the baby in. And all adjustments are within reach of the parent. It’s quite genius actually.

Most users have commented on how it’s like wearing a well-fitted backpack.

Most Comfortable Baby Carrier for Kids

Made from softly padded cotton fabric, this is a product that grows with the child. Weight range: Birth – 15kg. It also ensures that no matter the movement, your child is safe and comfortable, within sight and well-ventilated.

High Quality Design and Built

Made from super soft 100% breathable organic cotton, the carrier is Oeko-Tex ® Standard 100 approved which means it contains no harmful chemicals or parts, a huge prerequisite for babies with hypersensitive skin prone to rash and allergies. And it is ergonomically designed for optimal comfort… not just for the baby, but for you as well.

Sturdy and well-built (everything from the seams to the clips to the poppers are neat, highly-durable and well-made), although some may call it bulky, the carrier is machine-washable although a tumble dry is not really advised.

Most spills and stains, however, can just be wiped off with a slightly damp cloth.

Multiple Seating Positions for Kids and Infants

Front Facing Inwards Carrier

Its front carrier (with the baby in parent-facing position) has been approved for use from birth to about 4 months (3.5 kg/7.7 lbs or 53cm/21 inch). Offering a broad seated position for the baby, it is this position that offers the child optimal ergonomics (good support for the back, buttocks and thighs) and the ‘Happy Hips’ position which allows for the hips to be spread apart with the thighs supported and the hips bent.

Because of this, the Stokke MyCarrier has been officially acknowledged by medical experts and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as a hip-healthy baby carrier.

Front Facing Outwards Carrier

Once the baby can hold his/her head up unaided (usually at around 4-5 months, although every baby is different), parents can use the front-facing position.

And here’s a little secret for you…

Look under the front panel and you will find an adjustment (a zip and 2 poppers) that you must unlock so as to lengthen the carrier and narrow the seat making it more comfortable for the baby when facing forward.

Back Carrying Carrier

The back carrier can be used from 9-months onwards and upto around 3 years of age (or 33 lbs). Simply attach the toddler carry piece onto the base of the lumbar support segment, fasten your child into the harness, hitch it to both sides of the carrier, put it onto your back and affix the waist and chest buckles.

The chest strap can then be repositioned up or down, depending on the parent’s torso length and height .

Another little secret– this seat can be adapted for when the child is approximately 18 months to ensure that your curious toddler can easily see and explore all the new sights and sounds his now expanding world has to offer.

What’s more is that if your baby falls asleep in the carrier (more than likely to happen given its soft and safe cocoon like seating), you can simply lean over carefully (see that you hold on to the child securely while doing this), unfasten the clips and fixings and gingerly lay the baby down).

Downsides of Stokke Baby Carrier

Available in red, brown, deep blue, black and black mesh ( which allows for better air flow so keeping cool is easier in fairly hot climes ), the Stokke MyCarrier comes in three pieces and has lots of different parts and attachments that could prove difficult to put together – considering the instructions that come with it aren’t entirely self-explanatory.

Most new users will also find that getting your little ones into the sling without some help could prove slightly difficult. Once you get the hang of it though – yes like everything else that we love in this world, there is a slight learning curve – you and your baby will be out and about in no time at all.
